PDF OCR — Make Scanned PDFs Searchable

A scan is just a picture of a page — Ctrl+F finds nothing. This tool reads the text with OCR and layers it invisibly back over the scan, so the pages look identical but become fully searchable and copyable.

Files never leave your device

Instant Processing

No waiting, no queue

Clean output, always free

How It Works

A simple 3-step process — no signup, no software needed.

1

Upload the Scan

Drop in any scanned or image-based PDF. The file stays on your device — nothing is uploaded.

2

Pick the Language

Choose the document language so the OCR engine loads the right recognition model. Accuracy depends heavily on this.

3

Download Searchable PDF

Every page is read, and an invisible text layer is placed over the original scan. Download and press Ctrl+F.

Real-World Examples

What people actually use this tool for.

📄

Contracts and agreements you only have on paper

You scanned a 40-page signed contract years ago and now need to find one clause. Without OCR you scroll page by page. After OCR, Ctrl+F jumps straight to the term — and because the file never leaves your browser, the contract stays confidential.

🎓

Lecture handouts and old textbooks

Photographed chapters become searchable, so you can find every mention of a concept across hundreds of pages instead of flipping through. The text also becomes copyable for quoting in notes.

🧾

Receipts and invoices for bookkeeping

A folder of scanned invoices turns into a searchable archive. Look up a vendor name or invoice number instantly at tax time rather than opening files one by one.

📚

Archival and genealogy research

Scanned records, newspaper clippings and registry pages become full-text searchable, which turns hours of manual reading into a few keyword searches.

Professional-grade tools with complete privacy and instant results.

🔒

Complete Privacy

OCR runs in your browser with Tesseract compiled to WebAssembly. Contracts, medical records and financial scans never touch a server.

💰

Free Where Others Charge

OCR is a paid feature on most PDF suites, unlocked only with a monthly subscription. Here it is simply free, with no page or file cap.

🌍

12 Languages

English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and Hindi recognition models.

👁️

Looks Identical

The original scan is preserved pixel for pixel. The recognized text sits invisibly on top, so nothing about the page appearance changes.

♾️

No Limits

No daily task caps, no 5MB ceiling, no premium tier. Process a 500-page scan if you need to.

📱

Works Offline

After the page and language pack load, recognition continues without a network connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know.

What does OCR actually do to my PDF?
It reads the text in the page image and stores it as a hidden text layer positioned over the original scan. The page still looks exactly the same, but search, selection and copy now work.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. Recognition runs entirely in your browser using Tesseract compiled to WebAssembly. The only network request is the one-time download of the language model, which is then cached.
Why does the language setting matter so much?
OCR matches shapes against a trained model for a specific script and vocabulary. Running an English model over Korean or Arabic text produces near-random output, so picking the correct language is the single biggest factor in accuracy.
How accurate is the recognition?
Clean 300 DPI scans of printed text typically come out very accurate. Low-resolution photos, skewed pages, handwriting and heavy background noise degrade results — rescanning straight and brighter helps far more than any setting.
Why is my file bigger after OCR?
Each page is re-encoded as an image plus a text layer. If size matters, run the result through Compress PDF afterwards.
Can I convert the result to Word?
Yes. Once the PDF is searchable, run it through PDF to Word and the recognized text comes across as editable paragraphs.
